A joint security team has foiled an attempted security breach at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, near Jos.
This is contained in a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Plateau Command, Mr Alfred Alabo, in Jos, on Thursday.
The PPRO said the attack was foiled late on Wednesday by a joint patrol team comprising personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, the military and other security agencies.
Alabo stated that the security team spotted an armed suspect lurking near the institute’s first gate at about 11:23 p.m. during a routine patrol.
“The suspect opened fire on the security personnel on sighting them, prompting the operatives to engage him.
“But the gallant officers overpowered and neutralised the suspect during the exchange,” he said.
Alabo further disclosed that an AK-47 rifle, bearing Breech No. 1969003173, was recovered from the suspect.
He added that the suspect’s body had been deposited in a hospital morgue for autopsy in line with due process.
The PPRO further disclosed that preliminary investigation indicated that the suspect belonged to a notorious criminal syndicate; while efforts were ongoing to identify and arrest other members of the gang.
Alabo said that the Commissioner of Police (CP), Bassey Ewah, commended the security team for their gallantry, vigilance and synergy during the operation.
The PPRO quoted the commissioner as saying “the swift response prevented what could have become a major security breach at one of Nigeria’s strategic institutions.”
Alabo reassured residents that security across Plateau remained robust and urged them to report suspicious activities to security agencies. (NAN)
