A Republican lawmaker’s comments about Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche were ridiculed on Wednesday.
Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) told CNN anchor Kasie Hunt that Blanche — President Donald Trump‘s pick for attorney general who testified before senators during a heated confirmation hearing amid growing scrutiny over his ties to the president and other ethical concerns — would likely get the Republican senator’s vote.
“I think Mr. Blanche is a good lawyer,” Kennedy said. “I like his demeanor. I think he’s honest. I think he’s frank; he gives the president frank advice. I don’t think the president necessarily always takes it. But I think he looks the president in the eye and tells him what he thinks.”
Kennedy made it clear where he stood.
“I don’t see any reason not to confirm Mr. Blanche,” he said. “I doubt he’ll get many Democratic votes on the committee. I don’t think my Democratic friends on the committee dislike Mr. Blanche; I think they dislike the president, and this is their way of getting at the president by going through his proposed attorney general. But I thought he did a pretty good job today.”
Social media users mocked the GOP lawmaker’s remarks.
“Unreal. This cowardly, no-spine R Senate is going to confirm Trump’s personal lawyer no matter HOW corrupt, and very possibly criminal, he is. They’re all complicit and accessories to any future crimes Trump and Blanche commit,” user SaintLaurant, a political account with more than 15,000 followers, wrote on X.
“Guy can’t think of one- really,” Mike Fichera, a political commentator, wrote on X.
“He’s tainted by conflict of interest because he was Trump’s personal attorney and that’s a very, very good reason not to confirm him,” attorney Gary Skye wrote on X.
