THE Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says it recorded a 25.65 per cent reduction in road traffic crashes and a 25.35 per cent drop in traffic-related injuries nationwide between January and May 2026.
The Corps Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri, disclosed this on Thursday at the Joint Security Press Briefing organised by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) in Abuja.
Ohaeri said the improvement was achieved despite intensified nationwide enforcement that led to the arrest of 279,414 traffic offenders and the booking of 308,816 traffic offences across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
He said the corps recorded 2,214 road traffic crashes involving 4,165 vehicles during the period, affecting 16,349 persons, with 1,181 deaths, while 7,809 sustained injuries and 7,359 others escaped unhurt.
According to him, FRSC also recovered 12 stolen vehicles comprising eight cars, two Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs), one tricycle and one bus, while producing 470,010 number plates and registering 232,476 vehicles nationwide.
The corps spokesman said FRSC launched Operation Guduma to tackle mix-loading and the use of fake diplomatic number plates, resulting in the arrest of 1,686 offenders, including 683 for mix-loading violations and 1,003 for diplomatic number plate offences.
He added that the corps processed 72 investigation requests from security and law enforcement agencies through its vehicle and driver database to support criminal investigations and vehicle tracing.
Ohaeri reaffirmed FRSC’s commitment to reducing road traffic deaths and injuries through sustained enforcement, intelligence-led operations, public sensitisation and collaboration with relevant stakeholders. (NAN)
