In a stunning legal twist, the former PhD student filed a petition to reverse the guilty plea that saved him from death row, while asserting an “absolute claim of innocence.”

The former criminology PhD student has filed a petition for “post-conviction relief” in Idaho’s Ada County District Court. This is reportedly a specialized legal move that lets convicts fight their sentence completely outside the normal appeals process.

Interestingly, Kohberger is said to be representing himself, going completely rogue without a lawyer.

He originally took a plea deal to dodge the death penalty, which earned him four life sentences for the murders of University of Idaho students Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin.

Now, Kohberger wants a total do-over, claiming that he was completely manipulated into accepting the plea deal and fed lies and “false promises.”

Steve Goncalves, the father of Kaylee Goncalves, has since hit back at Kohberger for his recent legal move, stressing that he is not scared about facing him off in trial.

Goncalves, who has been extremely candid about his feelings of anger toward the PhD student, told the Idaho Statesman that he and his family are ready to see that the accused killer gets the death penalty, which the plea deal helped save him from initially.

“We’re not scared of it,” the grieving father warned in a statement, adding, “I always stood by the work of the FBI agents and other people. If he wants to fight for the death penalty, that’s exactly what we’ll go for, and that’s what he’s facing.”

Goncalves continued, “There’s so much evidence against him in this case. So we’re not scared of a trial, not one bit.”

During an interview with the Daily Mail, Steve Goncalves and his wife Kristi opened up about their next chapter, announcing the launch of The Kaylee Goncalves Foundation to honor their daughter’s memory.

Operating under the moniker “Murder Has a Name,” the non-profit aims to bankroll cutting-edge forensic DNA testing to capture predators and deliver answers to families of cold-case victims.

The organization will reportedly team up with Othram, the forensic lab that used Investigative Genetic Genealogy (IGG) to tie Kohberger to the knife sheath DNA left at the crime scene.

“I want to hunt killers. I want to hunt them down,” Steve said about the organization. “I want to turn the tables on them. We’re going to hunt those people down. We’re going to find them.”

He added, “It’s time to hunt the killers down and give them a taste of their own medicine.”

Meanwhile, in his recent statements, Kohberger ripped into the state’s case, dismissing the prosecution’s official timeline of events as a highly narrow and “myopic narrative” that amounted to a “work of fiction.”

According to NBC News, he argued that the core evidence used to lock him up went completely unvetted, claiming its “faulty premises were never challenged at trial.”

The former student blamed a ruined legal process for the lack of answers, stating that because the case was “circumnavigated by a broken plea, the trial never provided the public the clarity conducive to closure.”

Kohberger went on to insist that “justice shall remain abjectly miscarried unless” his guilty plea is withdrawn and that real closure is impossible if the current verdict persists.

Before making his bold move to undo his guilty plea, reports indicated that Kohberger was struggling with life behind bars.

He has been housed at the Idaho Maximum Security Institution (IMSI), widely recognized as one of the harshest facilities in the state’s prison system, since receiving four life sentences earlier this year.

While some might assume the perpetrator of such a crime would adapt easily to a tough environment, reports suggest otherwise.

Speaking with the Daily Mail, Pulitzer Prize-nominated investigative journalist Howard Blum explained that Kohberger’s personality has made it difficult for him to adjust.

Blum, who authored a book on the case, noted that a “self-important personality” has hindered his ability to cope with his new reality.

“Murder is about control,” he said. “And prison is the ultimate situation where you have no control. He’s not responding well to that.”
