Brazil forward Neymar has announced his retirement from international football, bringing his 16-year career with the national team to an end.
The 34-year-old confirmed his decision after representing Brazil at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the five-time world champions were eliminated in the last 16.
Neymar made the announcement while speaking to reporters after Santos defeated Universidad Central 4-2 in the second leg of their Copa Sudamericana knockout-round playoff.
The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain forward said he had given everything to Brazil throughout his international career but no longer wanted to continue wearing the national team’s famous yellow shirt.
“My time with the national team is over,” Neymar said.
He added that representing Brazil had brought him happiness and allowed him to create lasting memories, stressing that he had always given his maximum effort whenever he played for the country.
Neymar’s final appearance for Brazil came in the World Cup last-16 meeting with Norway.
He scored a stoppage-time penalty in that match, but the goal was not enough to prevent Brazil from exiting the tournament.
His decision closes one of the longest chapters in his career after 16 years representing Brazil at senior level.
Neymar now leaves the international stage with his future focused on club football, following the conclusion of Brazil’s World Cup campaign.
