A group of gunmen believed to be bandits have attacked a community in Katsina State and killed a Vigilante leader killed identified as Nuhu Barau, causing massive unrest in the area.
The armed when were said to have made way into the area and shot Barau, causing his death, in an incident which led to a protest that was accompanied with temporary road blockage by some youths who expressed disatisfaction over the mishap.
The casualty was said to be the leader of the local security team n Gora Village in Malumfashi Local Government Area, as relayed by the police command.
The security agency confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Thursday by its Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Sadiq, disclosing that a distress call was received at the Malumfashi Divisional Police Headquarters at about 10:00 am on yesterday, reporting that armed bandits had invaded Gora Village.
The statement states that the operatives were immediately mobilised to the scene, where they successfully repelled the attackers and foiled more assault on residents in the area.
The command stated that while normalcy has been fully restored to the area, following the protest which lasted for about four hours, no arrests have been made yet. However, it added that investigation is ongoing with a view to arresting the fleeing assailants and unravelling the circumstances surrounding the incidents.
Sadiq then reiterated the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the state, and added,“While the Command deeply sympathises with the community, it strongly cautions members of the public against taking the law into their own hands.
“Members of the public are urged to channel all grievances through the appropriate channels”.
