Gunmen have killed three miners returning from a mining site, in yet another ambush attack highlighting the persistent insecurity targeting residents and workers in Plateau State.
The deceased have been identified as 45-year-old Maren Agom, a native of Tadai Village in Manguna District, who suffered a gunshot wound to the head; 38-year-old Joe Buba from Josho Village in Daffo District, who was shot in the chest; and another victim identified simply as Yellow, whose age and surname were not immediately available.
A community source, Peter Maju, described the incident as another painful setback for residents already living under constant security threats.
“This tragedy has left families devastated. We hope security agencies identify those responsible and prevent another attack,” the source said.
It was gathered on Friday that the incident occurred yesterday at about 7:15 p.m. along the GSS Daffo Road in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State as the miners were returning from a mining site at Fubok in Daffo District.
Following the attack, the victims’ bodies were evacuated to Alheri Medical Centre for preservation as community members mourned the latest loss of lives.
Maju, the community source, said security personnel were alerted immediately after the attack and have launched efforts to trace the gunmen.
“Security operatives responded after receiving the report and have strengthened patrols in the area to prevent further attacks,” Maju said.
Efforts to obtain official confirmation from the Plateau State Police Command were unsuccessful, as calls to the command’s spokesperson, DSP Alfred Alabo, were not answered before this report was filed.
The Guild reports that the latest killings add to the growing list of deadly attacks recorded in Bokkos and other parts of Plateau State in recent months despite ongoing security operations aimed at restoring peace.
