A tragedy unfolded in Grand Haven Township, Michigan, on Friday after eight people were found dead inside a home following a suspicious fire.
What we know so far
According to a news release from the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, emergency crews responded to a fire around 8:30 a.m. in the 14900 block of Riverside Trail. Upon arrival, authorities found six children and two adults dead inside the residence. The children were between the ages of 5 and 15, officials said. The sheriff’s office has not yet released the identities of the victims as authorities work to notify family members.
Was it a murder-suicide?
Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Jacob Sparks later said that some of the victims had suffered gunshot wounds. Investigators are considering the possibility of a murder-suicide, but Sparks stressed that the theory has not been confirmed.
“It’s too early for me to say that it’s a murder-suicide. I can tell you that that’s one theory that we have and we’re still looking to see if we can verify that,” Sparks told reporters outside the home Friday evening.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths and the cause of the fire.
“I don’t know if there were other means that were used. I know that some had gunshot wounds,” Sparks said. “It would be premature for me to say what caused their deaths.”
Authorities said they are not actively searching for an outside suspect at this time and do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public. Autopsies have been scheduled, with results expected Saturday.

Neighbors remember children killed in tragedy
Neighbors described the children as a familiar and active presence in the community.
Scott Fischer told News 8 that the children were often seen playing in the neighborhood.
“Shock,” he told the outlet. “Shocked, sad … if you heard noise in this neighborhood, it largely came from those kids running around playing with other kids, and to see something like this and to come home to this, literally our hearts dropped.”
Another neighbor, Mark Brininstool, said the loss of the children would leave a noticeable absence in the community.
“Kids made a lot of noise in the neighborhood, which is a good thing,” he said. “Exciting, they’re out playing, and now there’s going to be that void. And that’s really sad.”
