Five members of a single family were found dead in their family home in Umuimo, Osisioma Ngwa local government area of the State on Wednesday, July 22, 2026.
The Abia State Police Command has started an investigation to determine the cause of their deaths.
Three days after the five Umuimo residents went to bed, their neighbors and other community members found their decaying remains.
It was gathered that the father of the household, late Mr. Kachi Nnabugwu, his wife, Mrs. Chinaza Nnabugwu, and their three young children had not been seen leaving their house since Sunday, a situation that prompted neighbours to force open the locked door after repeated knocking went unanswered, only to find all five family members d£ad.
Containers of leftover food and a generator set were reportedly found inside the building after it was broken into.
The bodies of the victims were evacuated from the compound on Wednesday and taken to the mortuary, as residents of the area called for a thorough government investigation to establish the actual cause of their d£aths.
Contacted on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Abia State Police Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, confirmed the incident and stated that investigations had begun.
She explained that the Osisioma Divisional Police Headquarters was alerted to the incident on 22/07/2026 by the brother of the deceased, who reported that after failing to reach Kachi Nnabugwu, he and others went to his residence in Umuimo Village, Osisioma LGA.
She said that on arrival, repeated knocks went unanswered, prompting them to force entry into the house, where they found the lifeless and decomposing bodies of their brother and his family.
DSP Chinaka added that the crime scene had been visited, a preliminary visual inspection of the bodies conducted, and photographs taken, noting that the corpses had been deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy.
