Football’s governing body, FIFA, is set to formally discuss lifting the suspension on Russian teams, potentially paving the way for their return to international competitions.
The development could pave the way for Russia’s return to global football.
The governing body said yesterday that it had been made aware of the IOC’s decision to provisionally lift the suspension of Russia’s Olympic Committee.
FIFA and European football governing body UEFA suspended Russia and its ally Belarus in March 2022 after Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Since then, no Russian team has competed in FIFA or UEFA international competitions.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino earlier this year hinted at a possible change in position, saying: “We have to look at restoring Russian teams. This ban has not achieved anything; it has just created more frustration and hatred.”
Last month, FIFA also announced that all member associations, including Russia, would be allowed to participate in the inaugural Under-15 World Cup and festival, scheduled to take place in Azerbaijan from October 22 to 31.
Despite the suspension, Russia’s men’s national team has continued to play friendly internationals outside FIFA and UEFA competitions and is currently ranked 35th in the FIFA world rankings. The women’s national team has also remained active in non-competitive fixtures and is ranked 27th.
The prospect of lifting the ban has reignited debate over whether Russian teams could be reinstated in time for future major competitions, including the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, following the IOC’s latest decision.
