The Federal Government has approved a 35 per cent increase in hazard allowances for junior and senior members of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) in federal universities, alongside a new responsibility allowance of N600,000 annually for directors.
The revised allowance package, which takes effect from January 1, 2026, followed an agreement reached between the federal government and NASU on June 29, 2026 after months of negotiations over the union’s demand for improved welfare in response to rising inflation and the increasing cost of living.
The approval was conveyed in a circular issued by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) and signed by its Acting Secretary, Adighiogu Chiadi.
“Following the agreement between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions dated 29th June 2026, the Federal Government has approved the payment of the following allowances to non-teaching staff members of NASU in Federal Universities,” the circular stated.
Under the new package, the annual laboratory hazard allowance for employees on CONTISS 1-5 rose from N180,000 to N243,000, while workers on CONTISS 6-15 will now receive N486,000 annually, up from N360,000.
The government also reviewed responsibility allowances for senior non-teaching staff, although several approvals fell short of the union’s demands.
Registrars and bursars will now receive N840,000 annually, up from N750,000, while deputy registrars, deputy bursars and deputy directors were granted N480,000 annually.
Directors, who previously had no responsibility allowance, will now receive N600,000 annually, matching NASU’s demand, while heads of sections will receive N150,000 annually.
The government equally approved increases in field trip, teaching practice and industrial supervision allowances across all salary grades.
Staff on CONTISS 1-5 will now receive N81,000 annually, up from N60,000, while those on CONTISS 6-12 will earn N108,000 instead of N80,000. Workers on CONTISS 13-15 will receive N135,000 annually, an increase from N100,000.
Allowances under the Students’ Work Experience Programme (SWEP) were also increased across all salary levels.
For CONTISS 1-5, the allowance rose from N60,000 to N81,000 annually, while workers on CONTISS 6-12 will receive N108,000. For officers on CONTISS 13-15, the previous range of N60,000 to N100,000 was harmonised at N135,000 annually.
The circular further stated that the Provision Tools Allowance (PTA) had been absorbed into the Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance (CATA), while laboratory students-to-staff ratio supplementation would henceforth be covered under excess workload arrangements.
