Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command have arrested 14 suspects in two intelligence-led operations targeting cultism and other violent crimes across the state, recovering firearms, live cartridges and other incriminating exhibits.
According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the arrests followed follow-up actions based on information obtained from suspects already in police custody
On Wednesday, Ndukwe said operatives of the Anti-Cultism Sub-Unit of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), acting on information provided by one Nwodo Chinweokwu, recovered a locally fabricated single-barrel pistol hidden in a bush in Eha-Amufu, Isi-Uzo Local Government Area.
Chinweokwu had earlier been arrested alongside seven other male suspects during a joint operation, and his statement led investigators to the location where the firearm was recovered.
In a separate operation, the unit also acted on information provided by Izuchukwu Obieze, who was being investigated for conspiracy and cultism.
The follow-up operation in Ezeagu Local Government Area resulted in the arrest of five additional suspects, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other accomplices and recover more exhibits.
The Command said the suspects would be charged to court after the conclusion of investigations.
Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, commended the operatives for their efforts and reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to tackling cultism, armed robbery and other violent crimes across Enugu State.
He urged residents to remain vigilant, law-abiding and provide credible information to support police operations.
“We will continue to intensify our operations against cultism and violent crime. Residents should remain cooperative and provide timely intelligence to help us succeed,” Giwa said.
