The Enugu State Government has suspended three traditional rulers and four President-Generals in Ezeagu Local Government Area over alleged misconduct linked to security breaches in their communities.
The state government said the action followed allegations of conduct that undermined ongoing efforts to combat insecurity and maintain peace across the affected communities.
The suspension was announced on Thursday by the Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs, Charles Egumgbe, through the ministry’s spokesperson.
According to the government, the disciplinary action was necessitated by what it described as “serious acts of misconduct” that contravened Governor Peter Mbah’s zero-tolerance policy on insecurity and compromised efforts to safeguard lives and property in the state.
The affected traditional rulers are Igwe C. Ozoigbokwe of Umuaji Imezi Owa, Igwe Leo Nechi of Imezi Owa, and Igwe Benedict Adinde of Umuagba. The suspended President-Generals are Samson Ike of Umuagba Owa Town Union, Remigus Ozoanya of Ezema Owa, Peter Igwebuike of Imezi Owa, and Chief Lazarus Ejim of Ogwumike Owa.
Egumgbe said the alleged actions of the suspended officials had not only embarrassed the state but also undermined the government’s significant investment in security.
“This has not only brought embarrassment to the state, sabotaged the huge investment of His Excellency in the security of lives and property of Enugu people, but also brought disrepute to the revered traditional institution of the state,” he said.
The commissioner stated that the suspension was in accordance with the Traditional Rulers Law of Enugu State, 2024, and the Town Union Registration and Administration Law, 2025.
He added that investigations into the allegations were ongoing and assured that further administrative actions would be taken based on their outcome.
