People had strong opinions about “Love Story,” the latest Ryan Murphy docudrama anthology series, which in its first season focused on the tragic romance between John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette. The couple married in September 1996 and died in a plane crash less than three years later, in July 1999.
The buzzy melodrama became FX’s most-streamed limited series on Hulu and Disney+. It was nominated for the top award in that category on Wednesday but received only six nominations overall, the lowest among the shows nominated for best limited series. The others are: “Beef” (16 nominations), “DTF St. Louis” (13), “The Beast in Me” (9) and “All Her Fault” (7).
“Love Story” also received acting nods for Sarah Pidgeon, who plays Bessette, and Constance Zimmer who plays Ann Freeman, Bessette’s mother.
One notable snub: Paul Anthony Kelly, who stars as Kennedy, was not nominated.
The show’s popularity fueled a surge in ’90s nostalgia. Fans replicated Bessette’s Calvin Klein pencil skirt and other looks from the era, competed in a John F. Kennedy Jr. look-alike contest and stood in long lines at Manhattan restaurants and stores the couple visited during their romance.
