The Federal Fire Service (FFS) has denied claims in a viral video alleging that its personnel demanded payment before responding to a fire outbreak in Rumuo Dumanya, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, insisting that the allegations are false and do not reflect its operational procedures.
The clarification followed widespread reactions to the video, which accused firefighters of requesting money before attending to the emergency.
Responding to the allegation on Friday, the Service said the emergency call referenced in the video was not made to the Federal Fire Service.
In a statement signed by its National Public Relations Officer, DCF P.O. Abraham, the agency explained that it does not operate a fire station in Rumuo Dumanya.
It noted that its only facility in Rivers State is located at the Federal Secretariat Complex on Aba Road, Port Harcourt.
The Service maintained that it has never made payment a condition for responding to emergencies, stressing that firefighting is a statutory responsibility carried out free of charge.
“Requesting money before, during, or after responding to an emergency is neither the policy nor the practice of the Federal Fire Service,” the statement said.
While expressing sympathy to those affected by the incident, the agency acknowledged the losses suffered by victims and urged members of the public to contact the appropriate emergency response service during fire outbreaks.
It advised Nigerians to call the National Emergency Number 112 or the Federal Fire Service emergency line 08032003557 for prompt assistance, noting that timely reporting is crucial to effective emergency response.
The Service also urged the public to verify information before attributing allegations to the agency, reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property through prompt and professional emergency services.
