The Edo state government has presented a 7-megawatt (MW) mini-grid electricity licence to indigenous investor, IZENERGY Limited as part of efforts to expand electricity access, promote renewable energy and accelerate rural electrification across the state.
The Commissioner for Power, Hon. Paul Usenbo, presented the licence to the company’s management in Benin City, declaring that IZENERGY emerged successful after a rigorous assessment of its financial and technical capacity in line with the Edo state Electricity Law, 2025.
Usenbo said the company had secured approval to develop renewable energy projects across the three senatorial districts of Edo South, Edo Central and Edo North following feasibility studies conducted throughout the state’s 18 local government areas.
He said the initiative aligns with the Electricity Act 2023 and the Edo State Electricity Law, which provides for the decentralisation of electricity generation and distribution.
The commissioner added that the state government was pursuing a multi-pronged strategy to achieve energy sufficiency through a combination of the national grid, independent power projects and renewable energy solutions.
”We assessed and scrutinised IZENERGY Limited and found it technically and financially capable of undertaking this initiative. Consequently, we are issuing the company a 7MW mini-grid licence in accordance with the Edo state Electricity Law,” he said.
