Donald Trump Administration Seeks $10M More In Taxpayer Funds For Freedom 250 Events
Donald Trump’s administration is asking Congress for an additional $10 million in federal funding to cover costs incurred during National Mall events celebrating America’s 250th anniversary.
The move has left Democratic lawmaker Jeff Merkley taken aback, as Freedom 250-linked celebrations had already received substantial federal funding and financial backing from major corporations.
House Democrats have also accused the Trump-backed initiative of securing funds under false pretenses and pressuring donors to redirect contributions away from the bipartisan America250 effort.
The Donald Trump administration wants about $10 million more in federal funding to offset operational and security costs incurred during “Freedom 250” events recently held on the National Mall.
The request, submitted last week by the Department of the Interior, seeks to reimburse the National Park Service for expenses tied to a series of Freedom 250 events, including the “Rededicate 250” prayer gathering, the two-week Great American State Fair, and the July Fourth Salute to America.
According to The Washington Post, Interior Department officials said the funding would also cover costs associated with heightened security following threats surrounding high-profile events, including the UFC event outside the White House and the attempted shooting linked to the initial White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
“Given the elevated security threats against high-profile events in Washington, D.C. … an elevated security posture was needed to ensure the safety of the public at these events. This funding would help address the expenditures associated with the elevated security posture,” the department wrote in an email.
Jeff Merkley Pushes Back On Trump’s $10M Funding Request
4However, the request has drawn pushback from Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Oregon), the ranking Democrat on the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee that oversees funding for the National Mall.
In a letter to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, Merkley sought clarification on why additional taxpayer funds were being requested after Congress had already appropriated $150 million for Semiquincentennial events and activities through the Republican-enacted One Big Beautiful Bill.
He also noted that Freedom 250 received financial backing from major corporations but has refused to release its full donor list despite calls from members of Congress and public watchdog groups.
“It is unacceptable to ask the American people to bail out Freedom 250,” Merkley wrote. “Congress already appropriated $150 million, without bipartisan input, with the administration promising that private donors would help finance the rest. If the administration designated Freedom 250 as the responsible entity for these events, Freedom 250, not taxpayers, should be paying the remaining costs.”
House Democrats Raise Fraud Concerns Over Freedom 250
Merkley’s scrutiny follows accusations from Democrats on the House Natural Resources Committee, who claim donors were misled into contributing to the Trump-backed Freedom 250 organization.
In a report, lawmakers alleged that donors intended to give money to the bipartisan America250 initiative celebrating the nation’s 250th anniversary but were instead provided routing and account numbers directing their contributions to Freedom 250.
Without identifying whistleblowers who worked with the committee, the report alleged that Trump transformed what was intended to be a bipartisan celebration into an initiative that benefited him and his allies.
“I’m a lawyer, and I know better than to pronounce that a crime has been committed,” Rep. Jared Huffman (D-California) said. “But I do know the elements of fraud, and there is evidence of all those elements here.”
Trump Allies Accused Of Steering Donations Away From America250
4The primary difference between the two initiatives is that America250 is the official bipartisan congressional commission created in 2016 to plan the nation’s 250th anniversary, while Freedom 250 is a separate executive branch project closely tied to the Trump administration.
According to The Washington Post, America250 shifted its focus to hosting events outside Washington, while Freedom 250 concentrated on celebrations in the nation’s capital.
Even so, Trump allies allegedly pressured donors to redirect funding away from America250, limiting the bipartisan commission’s ability to carry out planned grants, educational initiatives, and volunteer programs.
The resulting loss of funding reportedly created “significant headwinds” for the organization’s programming, although America250 continued moving forward with additional private fundraising.
Freedom 250 Faces Prospect Of Congressional Probe
4America250 has remained operational, hosting events across the country, but it has been overshadowed by the high-profile Freedom 250 celebrations, which included the UFC event, the opening of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library, and a fireworks show.
The report also alleged that the Trump-aligned initiative employed several former U.S. DOGE Service officials and harvested users’ data for political purposes.
Huffman, who oversaw the report as the committee’s top Democrat, said broader investigations into Freedom 250 could follow if Democrats regain control of the House and its subpoena powers.
“If and when we have more tools at our disposal to do investigation and oversight, perhaps in the next Congress you will see a lot more information on this, I’m sure,” he said.
