The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 39-year-old man, Udeme Emmanuel, for allegedly operating an illegal mobile clinic and impersonating a medical doctor in Calabar.
The suspect was arrested following a complaint by a resident, Edemawan Samuel, who accused him of obtaining ₦500,000 under false pretences.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Ewa Etekpah Sunday, disclosed in a statement on Tuesday that Emmanuel was arrested by operatives of the Uwanse Division in Calabar South after investigations into the allegation.
According to the police, the complainant alleged that the suspect falsely presented himself as a medical doctor and collected ₦500,000 with the promise of securing employment for her children at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital.
The police said preliminary investigations indicated that Emmanuel used the false claim to deceive the complainant into parting with the money.
The command added that exhibits believed to be connected to the alleged offences were recovered during the investigation, while the suspect remains in police custody.
The statement said the Commissioner of Police had directed a comprehensive investigation to determine the full extent of the suspect’s activities and establish whether there were other victims or accomplices.
“The suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations if sufficient evidence is established,” the statement said.
The police urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, assuring residents that further updates would be provided as investigations progress.
