The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has cautioned newly appointed lower court judges against accepting unsolicited gifts and hosting lavish birthday celebrations, warning that such actions could undermine public confidence in the judiciary and expose them to petitions.
She urged the judges to uphold the highest standards of integrity, impartiality and professionalism, stressing that their conduct, both on and off the bench, must reflect the dignity of the judicial office.
Represented by the Administrator of the National Judicial Institute (NJI), Justice Babatunde Adejumo, the Chief Justice gave the charge at the opening of an induction course for newly appointed judges yesterday.
Justice Kekere-Ekun also urged the judges to remain committed to the timely and fair dispensation of justice, noting that integrity is essential to preserving the credibility of the judiciary.
“Most importantly, do not accept unsolicited gifts. You should also avoid unnecessary birthday parties. People will use such occasions to present gifts that can result in petitions,” she said.
The chief judge also congratulated the judges on their appointments, describing the judicial office as one that carries enormous responsibility in upholding the rule of law and ensuring access to justice.
She explained that the induction programme was designed to equip the participants with the knowledge and practical skills required for their new roles, with emphasis on judicial ethics, courtroom management, and the application of substantive and procedural laws.
