The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, in Borno State, has disclosed that it received over 600 calls of domestic violence and child abuse in the last six months, expressing concerns over the occurences of the unlawful act.
The state’s NHRC office relayed that the occurrences which also included human trafficking, unlawful detention, forced marriage, kidnapping and other human rights violations and added that domestic violence remains one of the most frequently reported of the violations, which has led to lots of serious frightening remarks by residents in the area.
The agency’s state coordinator, Jummai Mshelia, informed this on Thursday, disclosing that the stat recorded from January to June 2026, had many victims previously considering violence a family matter and were reluctant to speak, and commended the recent rate of their reports which is helping to curb the dastardly act.
Mshelia stated that the occurrences of poverty and lack of parental care have been factors pushing children into the streets, engaging in begging and other survival activities.
She urged parents and guardians to take greater responsibility for the welfare, education and emotional well-being of their children and reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to ensuring justice for victims and survivors of abuse, and also urged members of the public to continually make reports of cases in contributing their quota in ending the menace of the unlawful acts.
