Boat Mishap: Nigerian Navy Saves Two Teenagers in Bayelsa
The Nigerian Navy has rescued two teenagers from drowning after their wooden boat capsized in the waterways of Egweama Community, Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
The timely intervention by personnel of the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base (FOB) FORMOSO averted what could have ended in tragedy, as the victims were pulled to safety and given immediate medical attention.
The incident occurred on July 28, 2026, when the two 16-year-old boys ran into trouble while returning from a routine trip within the community waterways. Their wooden boat reportedly capsized due to adverse water conditions, leaving them stranded and at risk of drowning.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Director of Naval Information, Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, personnel of FOB FORMOSO swiftly responded after sighting the distressed teenagers and successfully rescued them from the water.
The Navy said the rescued boys were immediately evacuated to safety, where they received the necessary assistance and medical attention to ascertain their condition.
Folorunsho said the successful rescue reflected the professionalism and operational readiness of Nigerian Navy personnel in safeguarding lives within Nigeria’s maritime environment.
He added that the operation underscored the Service’s commitment to maritime safety, search-and-rescue operations, and the protection of lives in coastal and riverine communities.
According to him, the rescue also highlights the Nigerian Navy’s continued efforts to strengthen its relationship with host communities through responsive, people-oriented operations.
“The Nigerian Navy remains dedicated to ensuring the safety of all legitimate users of Nigeria’s waterways while sustaining its mandate of securing the nation’s maritime domain,” the statement added.
