Baze University Unveils Sweeping Reforms to Strengthen PhD Programme, Deepen Research Excellence
Abuja, Nigeria — Baze University has announced a comprehensive package of reforms aimed at strengthening its Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme, reinforcing the institution’s commitment to producing globally competitive scholars while further enhancing the quality, integrity, and credibility of doctoral education.
The reforms, approved by the University Management following consideration by the Board, under the leadership of the Chancellor and Founder, Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, introduce a more rigorous doctoral training framework that aligns with international best practices in postgraduate research.
One of the major innovations is the reclassification of the first year of the PhD programme as a Provisional PhD Studentship Year. Under the revised structure, students admitted into the programme will initially hold the status of Provisional PhD Students throughout the first two semesters of coursework.
During this period, students will undertake the University’s intensive doctoral coursework designed to strengthen their theoretical grounding, research methodology, critical analysis, and scholarly writing skills.
At the conclusion of the coursework, students will be required to successfully defend their doctoral research proposals before a duly constituted academic panel. Only candidates who satisfy this rigorous assessment will be formally upgraded to the status of PhD Candidates, qualifying them to proceed to the remaining four semesters devoted to seminars, independent research, and the production of an original thesis.
The doctoral research phase culminates in the submission and successful defence of a publishable thesis of between 80,000 and 100,000 words, reflecting original scholarship capable of making a significant contribution to knowledge.
In another major development, the University has approved the recruitment and engagement of distinguished professors from universities across Nigeria and from the global academic community to serve as co-supervisors of doctoral theses alongside Baze University’s professors.
The initiative is designed to expose doctoral candidates to wider intellectual traditions, multidisciplinary perspectives, international research standards, and broader scholarly networks, thereby enriching the supervision process and improving the quality and global competitiveness of doctoral research undertaken at the University.
As part of efforts to promote academic excellence and celebrate outstanding scholarship, the University has also instituted the Chancellor’s Prize for the Best PhD Thesis, which will be awarded annually to the doctoral graduate whose thesis demonstrates exceptional originality, scholarly depth, methodological rigour, and contribution to knowledge.
Similarly, the University has introduced an annual award for the Best Published Lectures of the Year, recognising outstanding scholarly lectures that have been developed into high-quality publications following rigorous academic assessment.
Commenting on the reforms, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abiodun Adeniyi, described the new initiatives as a deliberate investment in academic quality and research excellence.
According to him, the measures represent another milestone in the University’s continuing efforts to consolidate its reputation as one of Africa’s emerging centres of research and postgraduate scholarship.
“These reforms reflect our determination to ensure that every doctoral graduate of Baze University earns the degree through a process that is rigorous, globally competitive, intellectually enriching, and beyond reproach. They are consistent with our institutional commitment to excellence, diligence, credibility, and integrity in scholarship.”
Professor Adeniyi noted that the reforms embody the vision of the Chancellor and Founder, Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, whose enduring commitment to academic excellence continues to shape the University’s growth and global aspirations.
He added that by strengthening doctoral training, broadening supervisory expertise through international collaboration, and rewarding exceptional scholarly achievement, Baze University is positioning itself to produce researchers capable of addressing national, continental, and global challenges through impactful research and innovation.
The Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed that the University would continue to review and enhance its postgraduate programmes in line with evolving global standards, ensuring that Baze graduates remain among the most intellectually prepared, ethically grounded, and professionally respected scholars in academia and industry.
