THE Atiku Media Office has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of aiding efforts to weaken opposition parties by allegedly recognising rival leadership within the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, the media office alleged that INEC granted portal access to Mr Nafiu Bala Gombe, whom it described as a “pretender” to the ADC national chairmanship.
It claimed that the commission had already recognised the leadership of former Senate President, David Mark, making any parallel submission of candidates unlawful.
The media office alleged that the action contradicted the Electoral Act and INEC’s guidelines governing the submission of candidates for the 2027 general elections.
It also alleged that the move was intended to create internal crises within the ADC and other opposition parties.
According to the statement, only candidates emerging from recognised party primaries supervised by INEC can be validly submitted for elections.
The media office urged INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, to refrain from actions it said could undermine confidence in the electoral process.
It maintained that any candidates allegedly submitted by Gombe were null and void, insisting that only those submitted by the David Mark-led leadership were lawful.
The statement further alleged that the commission’s actions were part of efforts to weaken opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Realnews Magazine reports that INEC had not issued an official response to the allegations as of the time of filing this report.
