57 India-interest vessels crossed Strait of Hormuz since Feb; 3,918 seafarers evacuated, 7 killed
According to Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways sources, a total of 57 vessels carrying cargo bound for India have transited the Strait of Hormuz since February, when the conflict began. And 11 Indian-interest vessels (07 Indian flagged and 04 Indian bound) and 148 Indian seafarers are stranded in the Persian Gulf currently waiting to transit through the Strait of Hormuz.
Of these 57 vessels, 19 transits took place between 01st March and 17th June, 2026. Following the signing of the Iran-USA Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on 17th June, a total of 38 transits have taken place.
The 57 transits comprise 21 Indian-flagged vessels and 36 foreign-flagged vessels.
The 36 foreign-flagged vessels include nine from the Marshall Islands, eight from Liberia, five from Panama, two each from Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Malta and Singapore, and one each from the Cayman Islands, Greece, Gibraltar, Vietnam, China and Hong Kong.
By vessel type, the transits comprise 25 bulk carriers, 14 LPG carriers, 13 crude oil tankers, two LNG carriers, one container vessel, one oil/chemical tanker and one diving support vessel.
The ministry has identified a total of 11 vessels of Indian interest, comprising both Indian-flagged and India-bound foreign-flagged vessels, for evacuation from the Persian Gulf, west of the Strait of Hormuz.
This includes four vessels carrying fertilizer cargo, identified by the Department of Fertilizers under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, and seven other vessels of Indian interest identified by the Directorate General of Shipping under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
Meanwhile, the Liberia-flagged bulk carrier MINOAN COURAGE (IMO No. 9288526) has transited the Strait of Hormuz. The vessel is carrying 47,250 metric tonnes of urea bound for Jaigarh and is manned by a crew of 24 Philippine nationals.
As of 13th July, a total of 3,918 seafarers have been evacuated by various shipping companies.
The ministry has also reported four incidents involving Indian-flagged and 23 incidents involving foreign-flagged vessels with Indian crew. These incidents have resulted in seven fatalities, one presumed deceased, four injuries and one missing person.
