Zamfara Police Neutralise Bandit Leader, Arrest Four Suspects in Separate Operations
The Zamfara State Police Command has recorded significant operational successes in its ongoing crackdown on violent crime, including the neutralisation of a notorious bandit leader, the arrest of four suspects, and the recovery of firearms, motorcycles, and other exhibits across separate operations in Gummi Local Government Area and Gusau.
According to a statement issued in Gusau, the first operation was conducted on June 9 at about 6:30 p.m. by operatives of the Violence Crime Response Unit (VCRU), led by CSP Usman Halilu Modibbo, the Divisional Police Officer of Bukkuyum Division.
The operation followed credible intelligence indicating the presence of armed bandits around the outskirts of Birisawa community in Gummi LGA. Acting on the information, the operatives mobilised swiftly to the location, where they made contact with the suspected criminals, resulting in a fierce exchange of gunfire.
During the encounter, a notorious bandit leader was neutralised, while three other suspects were arrested. Several members of the gang reportedly escaped into a nearby forest with varying degrees of gunshot injuries.
Following the operation, the police destroyed the criminal camp and recovered three firearms and five motorcycles believed to have been used for their operations.
The Command stated that the operation forms part of sustained efforts to dismantle bandit networks, deny criminal groups safe havens, and disrupt their mobility across the state. It added that follow-up operations are ongoing to track and apprehend fleeing suspects.
In a separate development, police in Gusau arrested another suspect linked to alleged violent crimes and acts of public disorder within the state capital and surrounding areas.
Security sources disclosed that the arrest was part of ongoing efforts to curb youth violence and criminal activities contributing to insecurity in urban centres. The suspect is currently in custody and assisting investigators with ongoing inquiries.
Authorities said the case has been transferred to relevant investigative units for further interrogation and analysis, while efforts are underway to determine the suspect’s level of involvement in reported incidents.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order across Zamfara State and urged residents to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible intelligence to aid ongoing operations.
It also emphasized that investigations are ongoing, and that all suspects remain presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent court.
