Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said the Super Eagles have been forgiven following Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Wike said former Nigeria captain Joseph Yobo informed him that the national team had promised to ensure the country returns to the tournament in the future.
The minister made the comments during the commissioning of Collector Roads 01 and 02, linking Mabushi Bus Terminal with Ahmadu Bello Way in Abuja.
Yobo shares team’s commitment
Wike praised former Super Eagles players Joseph Yobo and Emmanuel Babayaro during the event.
He revealed that Yobo told him he had passed on a message to the current national team players after Nigeria missed out on the global competition.
According to Wike, the players assured that the setback would not happen again.
Nigeria aims for World Cup return
Nigeria’s absence from the 2026 FIFA World Cup has generated disappointment among football supporters, with many calling for improvements in the national team setup.
The Super Eagles have previously featured regularly at the tournament and will now focus on future qualification campaigns.
Wike said the team’s commitment to returning to the World Cup was a positive sign for Nigerian football fans.
