Mexico begin World Cup campaign with victory over South Africa
Mexico have started their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign on a winning note after defeating South Africa 2-0 in the tournament’s opening match.
Playing in front of a packed stadium, El Tri delivered a strong performance to claim three points and give their supporters a memorable start to the competition hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Goals from Julian Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez secured the victory for the home side.
Quiñones gives Mexico early advantage
Mexico quickly took control of the match, dominating possession and putting pressure on South Africa’s defence from the opening minutes.
Their attacking approach produced the first goal in the ninth minute after Quiñones reacted fastest to a defensive mistake.
The forward collected the loose ball near the penalty area before calmly finishing past goalkeeper Ronwen Williams to put Mexico ahead.
The goal lifted the atmosphere inside the stadium as the hosts continued pushing forward.
South Africa struggle to contain Mexico attack
Mexico created several opportunities during the first half, with Jiménez coming close to adding another goal.
Quiñones also went close when his effort hit the outside of the post as South Africa struggled to deal with Mexico’s movement in attack.
However, South Africa remained dangerous and almost found an equaliser before halftime, with Raúl Rangel making an important save to deny Mbekezile Mbokazi.
Jiménez seals victory after red card setback
South Africa’s hopes of a comeback suffered a major blow shortly after the restart when Yaya Sithole received a straight red card in the 49th minute.
Mexico used their advantage and extended their lead in the 67th minute.
Roberto Alvarado delivered a quality cross into the box, allowing veteran striker Raúl Jiménez to score with a powerful header.
The second goal gave Mexico full control of the match.
Late drama as both teams finish with red cards
The final stages saw more disciplinary drama after VAR reviews led to further dismissals.
South Africa were reduced to nine players when Themba Zwane was sent off in the 84th minute.
Mexico also finished the game with 10 men after César Montes received a late red card during stoppage time.
Despite the late incidents, Mexico comfortably managed the closing minutes and secured a positive opening result.
