The University of Lagos, UNILAG, has confirmed that students who were stranded in China after completing a one-year academic exchange programme have started returning to Nigeria.
The development followed public attention on social media after an appeal was made on X, calling for urgent assistance for the affected students.
The university said the matter was quickly addressed and the students were provided with the necessary support to continue their journey home.
Social media users raise alarm
The situation gained attention after an X user, @Osunwede, raised concerns about the students’ condition and appealed for help from relevant authorities.
She later explained that the students had completed an academic exchange programme in China and were expected to return to Nigeria.
According to her, issues with their travel arrangements caused delays, leaving the students stranded.
University responds to concerns
Another social media user claimed the students faced difficulties after their return arrangements reportedly failed, leading to additional travel challenges.
The user said the matter received attention after the Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG intervened and provided immediate assistance to the students.
Responding through its official X account, the university said the issue had been resolved.
“Thank you for reaching out. The situation has been swiftly resolved. The students have been well taken care of, and are now on their way back home,” the university stated.
Calls for investigation into incident
The user who initially raised the alarm appreciated the university’s response but called for an internal review to prevent similar situations in the future.
She also alleged that the lecturer involved in the programme should be investigated, although the university has not announced any official action regarding the claim.
UNILAG has continued to monitor the students’ return as they make their way back to Nigeria.
