The United Kingdom has appointed a diplomat, Peter Vowles, as its next High Commissioner to Nigeria, with the new envoy set to formally assume office in September 2026.
Vowles will succeed Richard Montgomery, who has served as the British High Commissioner to Nigeria since April 2023 and has overseen diplomatic engagements between both countries during a period marked by expanding cooperation in trade, security, education and economic development.
The appointment was announced on Monday by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), which confirmed that Vowles would take up his posting in Abuja later this year.
According to the statement, Vowles brings extensive diplomatic experience to the role, having previously served as the United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe.
Over the course of his career, he has held several senior positions within the British diplomatic service, working on issues relating to international development, governance, economic cooperation and foreign policy.
His appointment comes as the United Kingdom and Nigeria continue to strengthen bilateral relations across a range of sectors, including trade and investment, security cooperation, climate action, education, healthcare and migration management.
Nigeria remains one of the UK’s most important partners in Africa, with strong people-to-people ties and significant commercial links between the two countries.
Vowles is expected to officially assume his duties in September 2026, when he will lead the British High Commission in Abuja and oversee the UK’s diplomatic engagement with Africa’s most populous nation.
