The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced the commencement of applications for the 2026 edition of the EducationUSA Opportunity Fund Program (OFP), an initiative designed to support outstanding Nigerian students from low-income backgrounds seeking admission to higher education institutions in the United States.
According to a statement issued by the U.S. Embassy and Consulate in Nigeria, applications opened on June 15 and will close on June 30, 2026.
The program targets academically exceptional students who demonstrate strong leadership potential but face financial barriers in pursuing educational opportunities abroad. Through the initiative, selected participants receive financial and advisory support to navigate the U.S. university application process.
Unlike conventional scholarship schemes, the EducationUSA Opportunity Fund Program focuses on covering essential application-related expenses, including standardized test fees, university application charges, and other costs associated with securing admission to U.S. institutions.
The U.S. Mission said the initiative aims to ensure that talented students are not excluded from international academic opportunities because of financial constraints.
“The program is designed to support high-achieving students with strong academic performance and leadership potential to successfully pursue U.S. higher education opportunities,” the mission stated.
The 2026 cohort is also aligned with the global Freedom250 initiative, which commemorates 250 years of American innovation, leadership, and democratic values.
Priority consideration will be given to applicants pursuing careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and other emerging technology fields considered critical to future economic and technological development.
The U.S. Mission noted that, in addition to academic excellence, successful applicants are expected to demonstrate integrity and a commitment to complying with U.S. immigration regulations and student visa requirements.
Interested candidates are required to submit a completed online application form along with academic transcripts, a personal statement, and evidence of leadership experience, community service, or research achievements.
Applicants have been advised to complete and submit their applications before the June 30 deadline, as late or incomplete submissions will not be considered.
The EducationUSA Opportunity Fund Program has helped many Nigerian students gain admission and secure full scholarships at U.S. colleges and universities by removing the financial obstacles associated with the application process.
