A court in the United States has sentenced a 44-year-old, Felix Rojas, to five-year prison sentence for sexually abusing the body of a deceased man.
Rojas was arraigned to the court where he pleaded guilty to the act after the prosecution tendered videos showing him targeting the deceased, Jorge Gonzalez, who died after losing consciousness on a train trip.
The prosecutors played the video which shows the offender, a Brooklyn resident, picking from Gonzalez’s pocket in the Manhattan subway train, after noticing that he was unresponsive, and later surrendered himself to the police three weeks later after initially denying the allegations.
In addition to the five-year ruling, the transgressor was also placed under a 15-year supervision upon completion of his jail term.
According to reports, the US immigration authorities stated that Rojas is a Mexican national who had previously attempted to enter the United States unlawfully on multiple occasions, while the victim, Gonzalez, had lived in the United States for nearly two decades and worked various jobs to support family members in Mexico.
Speaking after the sentencing, the deceased family members described him as a devoted father and hardworking man who took on construction, restaurant and service jobs to provide for his loved ones.
The case drew widespread attention in the United States because of the unusual circumstances surrounding the crime and the questions it raised about safety and monitoring within New York City’s transit system.
