United States President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 100% tariff on imports from any country that introduces digital services taxes targeting American companies.
In a post on social media, Trump criticized European countries considering the “imminent” implementation of digital taxes on U.S. technology firms, warning that such measures would trigger sweeping trade retaliation.
“Please let this statement serve to represent that any Country that imposes such a Tax will immediately be met with a 100% TARIFF on any and all Goods sent to the United States of America,” the Republican president wrote on Friday.
He added that the proposed tariff would supersede any previously negotiated trade agreements, stressing that the penalty would apply to every country that proceeds with such taxes.
Trump has repeatedly opposed foreign efforts to tax or impose stricter regulations on American technology companies. Last year, he warned of new tariffs against countries pursuing similar measures, arguing that digital taxes and regulations “are all designed to harm, or discriminate against, American Technology.”
The latest threat comes ahead of Trump’s July 4 deadline for the United States and the European Union to conclude a trade agreement that would cap tariffs on most EU exports at 15%.
Digital services taxes remain one of the major sticking points in the negotiations, having been excluded from the proposed trade framework despite months of discussions between Washington and Brussels.
The proposed agreement followed months of negotiations after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen held talks with Trump during a visit to his golf course in Scotland.
