US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that “Russia should make a deal” to end its war against Ukraine, following talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the G7 summit in France.
Trump confirmed he had met with Zelensky at the summit in the spa town of Evian-les-Bains, with further talks planned later in the day, as G7 leaders push to increase pressure on Moscow to end more than four years of fighting.
He pointed to the heavy casualties suffered on both sides of the conflict, describing the toll as “ridiculous” and stating his intention to do whatever he could to help end the war.
Zelensky said on Monday that he had proposed to Trump the idea of meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin in the United States, arguing that the Kremlin leader might find such an offer harder to turn down than an earlier proposal for talks at the G7 summit, which the Kremlin had reportedly not responded to.
