Troops foil kidnap plot, neutralise terrorist in Kogi 

Troops of the 12 Brigade under the 2 Division of the Nigerian Army have successfully thwarted a planned kidnap operation and neutralised a suspected terrorist during a well-coordinated ambush in Lokoja local government area of Kogi state.

This was contained in a statement issued Sunday by the acting assistant director, Army Public Relations, 12 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Lt Hassan Abdullahi.
The statement said the operation was carried out on May 30, 2026, sequel to a credible intelligence report indicating that a group of terrorists was planning to launch kidnapping attacks within the Jakura II community.
“Acting swiftly on the intelligence, the troops deployed to a suspected crossing point along the old Obajana–Tajimi road, where they strategically laid an ambush to deny the criminal elements freedom of movement.
“Upon making contact, the troops engaged the terrorists in a gun duel. At the end of the encounter, one of the suspects was neutralised, while others fled the scene with suspected gunshot wounds.
“Subsequent exploitation of the area led to the recovery of one AK-47 rifle, five magazines, 70 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, a bandolier, and mobile phones” the statement said.
The military authorities noted that the recovered items further confirmed the group’s involvement in kidnapping activities in the area, adding that successful operation underscores the determination of troops of the 12 Brigade to sustain offensive actions against terrorists and other criminal elements threatening the security of law-abiding citizens.
The statement added that efforts are ongoing to track down and apprehend the fleeing suspects.
“Commander of the 12 Brigade, Brigadier General Kasim Umar Sidi, commended the troops for their vigilance, combat efficiency and dedication to duty,” he stated.
