President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the renaming and upgrade of the Institute of Petroleum Studies in Kaduna State as part of a major Democracy Day address marking June 12, 2026.
The institution will now be known as the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology, following a federal government approval aimed at expanding its academic scope and strengthening specialised training in Nigeria’s extractive industries.
President Tinubu made the announcement on Friday during his nationwide broadcast commemorating Democracy Day, describing the decision as both a national honour and a strategic investment in technical education.
He said the move was intended to preserve the legacy of the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, a key figure in Nigeria’s political and military history, while also addressing skills gaps in the country’s petroleum, mining, and solid minerals sectors.
“Among the architects of modern democratic Nigeria, we honour General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua for his vision of national partnership,” the President said. “In recognition of his contributions, the Federal Government has approved the revitalisation and renaming of the completed Institute of Petroleum Studies, Kaduna.”
The renamed institution is expected to focus on petroleum engineering, geosciences, metallurgy, and related fields, with plans to develop advanced laboratory infrastructure and strengthen collaboration with industry stakeholders, including the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.
Government officials say the upgrade will also support research and training initiatives designed to link academic work with practical industry needs, particularly in the energy and mineral resources sectors.
General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, who played a prominent role in Nigeria’s military and political transitions, remains widely recognised for his contributions to national unity and democratic development before his death in 1997.
The announcement formed part of a broader set of Democracy Day honours and recognitions unveiled by the President, which included tributes to individuals described as key figures in Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement.
