Throwback Video: Peter Obi reflects on wealth, politics, and exclusive American Express Cards
Former Anambra State governor and NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi speaks about his financial journey, revealing that his involvement in politics significantly reduced his personal wealth despite his success in business.
Speaking during a public engagement in a video that surfaced online, Obi displayed what he said were his American Express Platinum and Centurion (Black) cards, using them to illustrate his financial standing before entering politics.
According to him, he was among a select group of individuals who held the American Express Platinum Card when it was introduced in 1987 and later obtained the exclusive Centurion Card, commonly known as the Black Card.
Obi stated that he had built a viable and successful business before venturing into public service. However, he noted that his decision to enter politics came at a financial cost.
While acknowledging that politics made him less wealthy than he previously was, Obi maintained that he does not regret his decision to serve in public office.

“In 1987, American Express introduced platinum card for 5000 people, here is mine, they later introduced the Black card (Centurion card) in 1999 for 1000 people on the planet, here is mine. I had a viable business and while I don’t regret going into Politics, it made me poorer….”
