The man accused of assaulting an 18-year-old woman in a viral abuse video has been taken into police custody, according to human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu.
Gwamnishu shared the update while providing details about the case involving the woman identified as Chisom, whose alleged abuse video sparked public concern.
The activist said preliminary information gathered during their intervention suggested that Chisom was 15 years old when her relationship with the suspect reportedly started.
Activist says police investigation underway
The development follows a viral video showing the young woman with visible injuries during an encounter involving a man described as her husband and concerned neighbours.
Another video later showed Chisom receiving medical attention alongside Gwamnishu.
The activist had earlier said efforts were being made to ensure the suspect was brought before authorities, although he noted that Chisom initially pleaded against his arrest.
Suspect handed over to police
According to Gwamnishu, members of the Behind Bars Human Rights Foundation’s Lagos team assisted in the process that led to the suspect being taken to the Isheri Oshun Divisional Police Headquarters.
He said the suspect’s statement was obtained, he was detained, and police officers also visited Chisom at the hospital.
Gwamnishu added that investigations would continue as authorities work to establish the facts surrounding the case.
Family raises concerns over Chisom’s background
The activist also revealed that a relative of Chisom’s father contacted him with claims about the young woman’s childhood.
According to him, the relative alleged that Chisom was taken away with her siblings after her mother’s death when she was seven years old.
He said the family member claimed Chisom’s father had not seen some of his children for years and was reportedly unaware of any marriage involving his daughter and the man now accused in the case.
Support continues for young woman
Gwamnishu said his organisation would continue supporting Chisom as the investigation progresses.
He described the case as sensitive and said the young woman requires protection, care and assistance following the events that brought the matter into public attention.
