“Sir, this isn’t the story you told us” — Landlord fined ₦100k after reporting tenant to police

A lady has shared the story of how a landlord paid ₦100,000 after reporting a tenant to the police over a broken padlock.

According to the account, the incident began when a tenant was preparing to attend a job interview early in the morning and needed to leave the compound before the usual gate-opening time.

The landlord insisted that the gate would remain locked until 7 a.m., despite the tenant’s pleas that he was rushing for an important interview.

Tenant leaves after gate dispute

As narrated by the lady, the tenant  begged to be allowed out of the compound at about 6 a.m. but was unsuccessful.

Faced with the possibility of missing the interview, the tenant broke the padlock securing the gate and left the premises.

Later that day, the landlord returned with police officers, accusing the tenant of damaging the lock and seeking his arrest.

Police question neighbours

Upon arriving at the compound, the officers reportedly questioned neighbours about the incident.

“Did the tenant sleep here last night?”

When residents responded that he did not, the officers sought to know who had broken the padlock.

“Then who broke the padlock?”

According to the account, neighbours pointed to the landlord’s son, prompting the officers to question the landlord’s version of events.

“Sir, this isn’t the story you told us.”

The lady further claimed that before the officers left, the landlord paid ₦100,000 for wasting police time.

The story has since generated reactions online, with many social media users debating landlords’ rules, tenants’ rights, and the handling of disputes involving law enforcement.
