The Senate Committee on Water Resources and Sanitation has summoned the management of the Chad Basin Development Authority (CBDA) over allegations of diversion of internally generated revenue (IGR), demanding explanations and relevant documents as part of an investigation into the agency’s financial activities.
The committee’s intervention follows concerns surrounding the management of revenues generated by the Authority, with lawmakers seeking details of collections, remittances, asset management practices, and compliance with financial regulations governing public institutions.
As part of the probe, the Authority has been directed to submit comprehensive records relating to its operations, including a list of properties marked for disposal, its current asset register, and evidence demonstrating compliance with extant laws and regulations governing the disposal of public assets.
The Senate Committee, in a letter dated on Wednesday, also expressed concern over the ongoing disposal and auction of certain properties belonging to the Authority, noting that it had neither been formally briefed nor provided with information on the rationale, procedures, approvals obtained, or consultations conducted before the exercise.
According to the committee, the public nature and strategic importance of the assets involved make it imperative for the National Assembly to ascertain whether due process was followed and whether all relevant statutory requirements were complied with.
The letter stated that the invitation was issued in line with the committee’s constitutional oversight responsibilities as provided under Sections 88 and 89 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), as well as Order 85 of the Senate Standing Orders, 2023 (as amended).
Consequently, the management of the Chad Basin Development Authority has been directed to appear before the committee at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, in Meeting Room 117 of the Senate Building, National Assembly Complex, Abuja, to provide clarifications on the allegations and submit the requested documents.
The committee is expected to examine the Authority’s revenue management processes, asset disposal procedures, and compliance with applicable financial and procurement regulations as part of its broader oversight of agencies under its jurisdiction.
