A joint security operation involving the Nigerian Army, Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has led to the arrest of 46 foreign nationals in Ogun State.
The operation was carried out following intelligence reports and targeted several communities within the Ijebu area of the state.
Authorities said preliminary findings suggest the individuals were living in Nigeria without valid immigration documents.
Intelligence-Led Operation
According to military authorities, the coordinated operation began on June 11 and focused on locations within Ijebu Imushin, Ijebu Ilese and nearby communities.
Security operatives reportedly moved into the areas after receiving information about the activities of foreign nationals residing in the communities.
The operation resulted in the arrest of dozens of suspects during searches conducted across multiple locations.
Nationals From Four West African Countries
Officials disclosed that the arrested individuals include citizens from Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Togo and Senegal.
A breakdown of the arrests showed:
- 23 nationals of Côte d’Ivoire
- 18 nationals of Burkina Faso
- 4 nationals of Togo
- 1 national of Senegal
Among the suspects are 36 men and 10 women.
Suspects Explain Their Activities
During preliminary questioning, the individuals reportedly told investigators they were involved in trading and online marketing activities.
They claimed to be associated with QNet, an international direct-selling and e-commerce company that operates in several countries.
Authorities have not indicated whether any criminal activity beyond immigration-related concerns has been established.
Immigration Authorities Take Over Investigation
Following the operation, the suspects were transferred to the Ogun State Command of the Nigeria Immigration Service.
The agency is expected to continue investigations and determine appropriate actions in line with Nigeria’s immigration laws and regulations.
Officials said the process would include verification of identities, travel records and immigration status.
Security Agencies Intensify Monitoring
The arrests come amid ongoing efforts by security agencies to strengthen border security and monitor the activities of foreign nationals residing in different parts of the country.
