Retired General Rabe Abubakar Dies While In Bandits’ Custody

Retired Major-General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, has died while in the custody of bandits, the Katsina State Government has confirmed.

Abubakar and his wife were reportedly abducted in May while travelling through Katsina State.

The state government said the retired military officer died from health complications linked to diabetes and hypertension during his detention.

Katsina confirms death of retired general

In a statement released on Saturday, Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Mu’azu, described the incident as a painful loss to the state and the country.

The commissioner said security agencies and the state government made efforts to secure Abubakar’s release, but the situation ended tragically.

According to the statement, the retired general’s death was caused by medical complications while he remained in captivity.

Video showed Abubakar appealing for help

Before his death was confirmed, a video circulated online showing Abubakar and his wife appealing to the Katsina State Government for assistance.

In the video, they called for efforts to secure their release, while also making appeals linked to the release of detained bandits and recovery of seized livestock.

The footage increased concerns over the safety of the abducted former military officer.

Governor Radda mourns retired general

Katsina State Governor Dikko Umaru Radda expressed condolences to Abubakar’s family, describing the incident as a difficult moment for the state.

The government said the tragedy highlights the need for stronger efforts against criminal groups operating in affected communities.

The commissioner added that authorities remain committed to working with security agencies to ensure those responsible face justice.

Government promises continued fight against banditry

The Katsina State Government assured residents that efforts to improve security and eliminate banditry would continue.

Officials also extended prayers and support to the family of the late retired Major-General Rabe Abdulakdir Abubakar.
