The House of Representatives has extended the implementation of the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act to September 30, 2026.
The decision followed an emergency plenary session held under Order Five, Rule 2(2) of the House Standing Orders, during which lawmakers considered and passed a bill to amend the Appropriation (Repeal and Enactment) Act, 2025.
The bill, which moved through first, second, and third readings in a single sitting, extends the deadline from June 30, 2026, to September 30, 2026, after the House suspended relevant procedural rules.
Leading debate, House Leader Julius Ihonvbere said the extension was necessary because several capital projects in the 2025 budget had not been fully executed.
He explained that the amendment does not alter the content of the budget but only extends its lifespan to allow ongoing projects to be completed, warning that failure to do so could affect national development.
Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, who presided over the session, noted that reports from the Appropriations Committee and relevant agencies showed that capital implementation was still ongoing.
The House later dissolved into the Committee of Supply, where the bill’s clauses were considered and approved before it was reported back to plenary for final passage.
With the amendment now passed, federal ministries, departments and agencies have an additional three months to implement capital projects under the 2025 budget.
