The Anambra State Police Command has arrested four suspects in connection with alleged child abuse, torture and murder following the circulation of disturbing videos on social media that sparked widespread public outrage across the state.
The command said the arrests were made after investigations were launched into the incidents captured in the viral footage, which drew condemnation from residents, civil society groups and child rights advocates.
In a statement, the police disclosed that operatives carried out coordinated operations that led to the apprehension of the suspects, who are currently assisting investigators. Authorities said the arrests form part of ongoing efforts to combat child abuse and other forms of violence against minors in the state.
According to the police, the investigation was initiated after digital evidence from the viral videos revealed acts of cruelty against children. The command subsequently deployed officers from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to identify and track down those involved.
Preliminary findings indicate that some of the suspects allegedly operated facilities where minors were subjected to harsh and abusive conditions. Investigators are also probing reports of children being subjected to physical and psychological abuse under the guise of spiritual cleansing and other unlawful practices.
The police said rescued children have been placed under protective care, while arrangements are being made to provide them with medical treatment, counselling and other forms of support.
The command added that it is working closely with the Anambra State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare to ensure the welfare of the affected children and facilitate their rehabilitation.
Speaking on the development, the Police Public Relations Officer said the command remains committed to protecting vulnerable persons and ensuring that perpetrators of child abuse are brought to justice.
“The circulation of the videos exposed acts of cruelty that cannot be tolerated in any society. We want to assure members of the public that those responsible will face the full weight of the law,” the police spokesperson said.
Authorities also revealed that forensic experts are examining electronic devices recovered during the operation to identify possible accomplices and determine whether the abuse was part of a wider criminal network.
The police urged members of the public to refrain from sharing the graphic videos online in order to protect the dignity and privacy of the victims. Residents were also encouraged to report suspected cases of child abuse, neglect or exploitation to the nearest security agency.
The suspects are expected to be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations. Meanwhile, the Anambra State Government has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of children and ensuring that offenders are prosecuted in accordance with the law.
