The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation across the country, citing recent incidents of killings, kidnappings, and the continued captivity of schoolchildren abducted in Borno and Oyo states.
Obi made his concerns known in a statement shared on his official social media page on Monday.
According to him, more than two weeks after the abductions in both states, the victims remain in captivity despite ongoing efforts by security agencies to secure their release.
The former Anambra State governor also highlighted recent attacks in Plateau, Kogi, and Anambra states, which reportedly resulted in deaths, injuries, and abductions.
He specifically referenced the killing of at least seven people and the injury of 10 others during an attack on Gwon-Ajang village in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State. He also cited the reported abduction of over 25 residents and the killing of one person in Ayegunle-Igun Community, Kogi State.
Obi further lamented the killing of two police officers in Anambra State and recalled the abduction of dozens of pupils, students, and teachers from schools in Oyo and Borno states on May 15.
“Meanwhile, amid all these tragic developments, we politicians remain consumed by the next election, paying far more attention to political ambitions than to the safety and well-being of our children and fellow citizens,” Obi said.
He stressed that the continued wave of attacks across the country underscored the severity of Nigeria’s security challenges and called for urgent action to address the situation.
