Police Order Nationwide Crackdown on Fake, Concealed Number Plates
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has directed all Commissioners of Police, Tactical Commanders, and heads of police formations across the country to intensify enforcement operations against vehicles operating without valid registration plates, as well as those with concealed, altered, defaced, or otherwise obscured number plates.
The directive was issued during the monthly conference of senior strategic officers of the Nigeria Police Force held at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Centre, Force Headquarters, Abuja.
According to the police leadership, the increasing prevalence of unregistered vehicles and the deliberate concealment of number plates poses a significant threat to public safety and national security. The Inspector-General noted that vehicle registration remains a fundamental requirement for effective policing, stressing its importance in crime prevention, intelligence gathering, and overall law enforcement operations.
He warned that criminal elements frequently exploit unregistered or concealed vehicles to facilitate criminal activities and evade detection, thereby undermining ongoing security efforts across the country.
In response, all police formations have been directed to immediately commence nationwide enforcement operations targeting offending vehicles. The directive stipulates that any vehicle found without approved registration plates, or with tampered or deliberately obscured identification marks, is to be stopped, impounded, and processed in accordance with existing legal provisions.
The Inspector-General further urged vehicle owners to ensure full compliance with registration regulations, warning that enforcement will be applied uniformly without exemptions or preferential treatment.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to strengthening public safety, enhancing national security architecture, and ensuring strict enforcement of laws designed to prevent crime and protect citizens.
