The Ebonyi State Police Command has dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging that bandits and Fulani herdsmen invaded Nguzu Edda community in Edda Local Government Area, describing the claims as false, misleading, and a deliberate attempt to cause panic.
The rumour emerged after a video went viral online suggesting that armed groups had attacked or infiltrated the community.
However, the police said the information was entirely fabricated and not supported by any evidence on the ground.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, on Tuesday, Commissioner of Police, Hope Okafor, immediately ordered a response after the report surfaced.
The DPO of Edda Division was directed to verify the situation, while tactical teams from the State Command Headquarters were deployed to the area.
Upon arrival, police operatives conducted a thorough sweep of Nguzu Edda community, including surrounding bushes and nearby terrain, after which, no trace of bandits or armed herdsmen was found.
“Following a thorough search and combing operation of the affected bushes and surrounding areas, the Command wishes to categorically state that there are no bandits or Fulani herdsmen lurking in Nguzu Edda Community. The report is false, misleading, and intended to create panic and fear among residents,” Ukandu stated.
The Command urged residents to disregard the viral claims, warning that such misinformation is often spread by mischief makers to disrupt public peace.
It also assured the public that adequate security measures remain in place across Ebonyi State to protect lives and property.
