The Oyo State Police Command has debunked claims alleging the movement and infiltration of suspected terrorists into forests around the Ogbomoso axis and the Old Oyo National Park, describing the reports as false, misleading, and capable of causing unnecessary panic.
The Command said it was responding to a viral video and accompanying voice note circulating on social media, which alleged that suspected Lukarawa terrorists had been sighted within forested areas in parts of Ogbomoso and adjoining communities.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the police noted that comprehensive intelligence assessments and security reports available to the Command do not indicate any presence or movement of terrorists in the areas mentioned, adding that the claims were not supported by any credible security evidence.
The Command further disclosed that preliminary investigations revealed that the video being circulated was not recent, but an old footage that had been deliberately recycled and misrepresented to create fear and apprehension among residents.
It urged members of the public to desist from sharing unverified security-related content, stressing that such actions could heighten tension and disrupt public peace within affected communities.
Despite dismissing the report, the Command said it has deployed intelligence and covert operatives to border communities and vulnerable locations across the Ogbomoso axis as part of proactive security measures.
It added that the operatives are working in collaboration with local security structures, including vigilante groups, hunters, traditional institutions, and community-based intelligence networks to strengthen surveillance and early warning systems.
The Command also stated that visibility policing, confidence-building patrols, and intelligence-led stop-and-search operations have been intensified across Ogbomoso and surrounding areas to reassure residents and deter criminal elements.
While urging residents to remain calm and vigilant, the police encouraged the public to report any suspicious movement or activity to the nearest police formation or through official emergency channels.
The Command warned that the spread of false security information constitutes a criminal offence under the law and would not be tolerated, adding that those responsible for circulating misinformation would be identified and prosecuted.
It reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and security across Oyo State, noting that there is currently no credible intelligence indicating terrorist presence or infiltration in any part of the state.
