The Delta State Police Command has recorded another major success in its sustained crackdown on illicit drug trafficking and substance abuse, with the arrest of three suspected drug traffickers and the seizure of large quantities of hard drugs during separate intelligence-led operations across the state.
The operations, carried out by officers of the Special Enquiry Unit and the Command Anti-Vice Squad (CAVS), resulted in the interception of a truck loaded with banned and controlled substances, as well as the dismantling of a suspected drug distribution network operating in Delta State.
In one of the operations conducted on June 3, 2026, operatives of the Special Enquiry Unit deployed on stop-and-search duty at the First Niger Bridge Head, inward Asaba, intercepted a Mercedes truck with registration number KRV 837 ZN.
The vehicle was driven by 47-year-old Obinna Nwosu, a resident of Oba in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
According to the police, the suspect claimed he was transporting plumbing materials. However, officers became suspicious and subjected the vehicle to a thorough search.
The search uncovered a large cache of controlled and prohibited substances concealed within the truck.
Recovered items included 13,000 sachets of 100mg Tramadol, 100 sachets of 225mg Tramadol, 100 sachets of Swinol, 300 sachets of Rohypnol, 60 sachets of Codeine Phosphate tablets, and 100 tablets of Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), commonly known as “Molly.”
The command said the suspect was immediately taken into custody while investigations have commenced to identify and apprehend other individuals linked to the illicit consignment and its distribution network.
In a separate operation on the same day, operatives of the Command Anti-Vice Squad, acting on credible intelligence, stormed a suspected drug distribution centre located in Alegbo Community, Owa-Alero, in Ika North East Local Government Area of the state.
During the raid, two suspects identified as Henry Edward and Okwudili Kingsley were arrested. Preliminary investigations revealed that the duo allegedly operated a drug distribution network supplying illicit substances within the community and surrounding areas.
Items recovered from the suspects included five gallons of fermented cannabis mixture popularly known as “Monkey Tail,” a dangerous concoction often associated with violent crimes and substance abuse. Officers also recovered substantial quantities of substances suspected to be Indian hemp and other prohibited drugs.
Confirming the arrests on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Command, Bright Edafe, said all three suspects and the recovered exhibits remain in police custody as investigations continue.
Edafe noted that the command remains committed to intensifying efforts against drug trafficking and abuse, which have been identified as major drivers of criminal activities across the state.
Reacting to the successful operations, the Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, commended the officers involved for their professionalism, vigilance, and dedication to duty.
The commissioner reiterated the command’s determination to sustain aggressive operations aimed at dismantling drug trafficking syndicates and combating other forms of organised crime.
He stressed that illicit drugs continue to fuel cultism, armed robbery, kidnapping, and other violent offences, posing a serious threat to public safety and security.
Oyeniyi urged residents of the state to remain vigilant and support law enforcement agencies by providing timely and credible information that could assist in preventing crime, identifying criminal elements, and enhancing public safety across Delta State.
