AN Environmental Physicist, Prof. Sakiru Okedeyi, on Monday said that unless Nigeria significantly increased investment in physics-based research and innovation, it risked slowing its energy transition and renewable energy expansion.
Okedeyi, who is the Provost of the Postgraduate College at the Lagos State University of Education, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos.
He said that physics provided the scientific foundation for virtually all renewable energy technologies, including solar, wind and biomass energy systems.
“Physics is not merely a supporting discipline; it is a strategic enabler of Nigeria’s energy transition,” the expert said.
He urged government and industry stakeholders to increase investment in physics-based research and innovation to unlock the country’s renewable energy potential and strengthen long-term energy security.
According to him, Nigeria’s solar radiation levels, estimated at between four and seven kilowatt-hours per square metre daily across most regions, offer enormous opportunities for electricity generation.
“Physicists contribute by improving solar technologies, modelling energy conversion systems and enhancing the efficiency of renewable energy infrastructure.
“Physicists also help measure wind resources, identify suitable locations for wind farms and improve turbine performance under local climatic conditions.
“Biomass energy development relies on physics-based tools such as thermal efficiency analysis, energy conversion modelling and emissions monitoring,’’ Okedeyi added.
According to him, physicists play strategic roles in developing indigenous renewable energy technologies and advancing materials research for solar panels and battery storage systems.
The expert noted that research in energy-efficient technologies could help Nigeria reduce energy losses and improve electricity access for homes and businesses.
He also highlighted the role of physicists in providing evidence-based analyses for policymakers, training renewable energy professionals and strengthening university curricula.
According to him, Nigeria possesses the scientific capacity required to support its energy transition agenda but requires stronger institutional backing.
The expert said that inadequate funding, weak research infrastructure and limited policy support continued to constrain the contribution of physics to national development. (NAN)
