Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on young Nigerians to reject ethnic and religious division, urging them to focus on unity and the country’s future.
In a post on X, Obi reflected on lessons from the 2023 elections, particularly in Lagos. He said public discussions shifted away from issues such as governance and development and became centred on ethnic and tribal sentiments. He warned that similar narratives are beginning to surface again and urged Nigerians to remain vigilant.
Obi said some politicians turn to ethnic, religious and identity issues when they are unable to compete on ideas, performance, character or vision. According to him, such tactics are aimed at dividing citizens and making them easier to influence.
He said many people take part in these conversations without realising they are being drawn into narratives created by others. He added that some campaigns are spread by individuals who believe they are supporting a good cause without recognising a wider agenda.
The former Anambra State governor also spoke about the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye. He described Adeboye as one of Nigeria’s leading Christian figures and said he has consistently preached peace, prayer, love, reconciliation and national unity.
Obi said it would be unfair for young Nigerians to place responsibilities that belong to them on the 84-year-old cleric. He said the responsibility of building a better Nigeria rests mainly with the younger generation.
“The task of building a better Nigeria rests primarily on the shoulders of the younger generation. It is their duty to lead the conversations, champion the reforms, and drive the positive change our nation urgently requires,” he wrote.
He also warned Nigerians against becoming tools in the hands of people who promote division while publicly calling for unity. According to him, such efforts are designed to weaken the bonds that hold citizens together.
Obi urged young Nigerians to question narratives, verify claims and follow facts. He called on them to resist manipulation and avoid being drawn into hatred based on ethnicity, religion or admiration for public figures.
He said the Nigeria many citizens desire can only be built by people who choose unity over division and place the country’s future above narrow interests.
